Back in December of last year, it was rumored that Toyota would add two new sports cars to their lineup, to bookend their all-new RWD sports car, the Scion FR-S (co-developed with Subaru, of which Toyota owns approximately 18% of Fuji Heavy Industries). According to Car Advice, per chief engineer Tetsuya Tada, has officially confirmed that their sports car lineup will grow from one to three. It is being assumed at the moment that the other two sports cars will be labeled as Toyotas.
In regards to the sports car that will slot above the FR-S in both price and performance, although it may not revive the legendary Supra moniker, it will share the development with the upcoming BMW i8 hybrid supercar, per their agreement to develop vehicles together. The as-yet-named sports car will be rear-wheel drive, and more than likely will feature a hybrid powertrain, at least as an option.
Although the Supra will be “an upper-crust sportscar”, it will not directly compete with its natural rival, the Nissan GT-R. Rather than chase after Nurburgring lap times, the “don’t-call-it-the-Supra” will be focused on “fun” and overall driver enjoyment.
Conversely, the sports car that will slot under the FR-S will not only be another joint venture, but will be rear-wheel drive as well. It was speculated that the sports car might be front-wheel drive and be based off of one of Toyota’s existing platforms, but another joint venture will allow Toyota to subsidy the research and development costs. Like the “Supra”, Toyota has not confirmed the name for the smaller sports car, although the iconic MR2 and Celica nameplates have been mentioned.
Will the next two sports cars be as polarizing as the Scion FR-S and its twin, the Subaru BR-Z? Hopefully Toyota will take the feedback from enthusiasts and some of the motoring press, and deliver two knockouts.
